I’ve been thinking quite a bit about the recent student body impersonation of a 2–year–old at the University of Missouri and I can’t decide if the result is a victory for ignorance or immaturity.

Lets begin with the “feces swastika” in the dorm bathroom. Photos from a police report have surfaced, so the pathetic drawing did exist, but since when did the swastika become a symbol of anti–black racism?

World War II established once and forever that the Nazi swastika is an anti–Semitic symbol of genocide and the holocaust, which has absolutely nothing to do with blacks.

Can students there really be that ignorant? Doesn’t cable carry the History Channel?

So why were black Mizzou students offended? Are there so few Jews on campus that they asked for outrage reinforcements? Or once ultra–sensitive black students decided to annex the swastika, did Jewish students go on about their business?

Then we have the student body president peddling his story of pervasive racism on campus, but as others have pointed out the president is both black and homosexual.

Unless Mizzou has demographics seldom seen outside San Francisco, I would wager the vast majority of students are heterosexual. And probably white in addition.

As an outsider it would appear to me that when an overwhelmingly white and straight student body elects a homosexual black man as president, it’s a pretty strong indication there is very little racism on campus.

But then I thought electing a black man as president of the United States would usher in an age of racial harmony and you can see where that got us.

The other two racial incidents may have a bias component, but are at bottom trivial. A pick–up truck allegedly drives by and someone shouts the N–word at the student body president.

The president’s feelings are hurt. (This makes me wonder, does he have a driver’s license? Has he ever honked at someone that cut him off? Does he get out much?)

No one knows if the shouter was a student or even a resident of Columbia. Should the university president have taken immediate steps to ban all pick–ups from campus after receiving news of the holler–heard–round–the–world?

Should he have purchased sound–deadening headphones for all blacks to prevent such incidents in the future?

The other case involved a drunken student shouting the same word. That episode of loutish behavior is currently in the university judicial system. What do Mizzou black students want here? Verdict first and a trial later?

This could have been an educational moment for students. They could have learned college campuses are islands of tranquility compared with the world outside.

They could have learned part of the maturing process is not dwelling on minor slights and anonymous graffitti directed at someone else.

But that’s not what happened here.

Instead black students at the University of Missouri learned that if you throw a big enough tantrum, craven leftist administrators — trapped in their own ideological hothouse — will cater to your every demand.
