The Chicago Tribune writes Illinois has lost more residents than any other state in the nation, which comes as a relief to California politicians who are accustomed to leading in citizen evacuation.

The Tribune says 37,508 people left the state last year.

This makes me wonder where the reporter came up with those numbers. If that was Cook County alone (the home of Chicago) maybe the state would lead California in loses from a single county, but in absolute numbers that doesn’t compare with the 250,000 residents leaving the Golden State in 2013 — according to the latest figures from the IRS.

Still the numbers have Illinois big government leftists worried and that’s as it should be.

The top five states in the U.S. in domestic out-migration, with the exception of one, are all states Hillary carried in the 2016 presidential election.

Heading the list is New York, followed by Illinois, New Jersey, California, and the single Trump state — Pennsylvania.

The Tribune conducted a poll among "dozens of former residents who had fled within the past five years." The reasons are all familiar complaints to California conservatives who haven’t headed out themselves.

At the top of the list is high taxes, followed by fights over the state budget, crime, unemployment and the weather — the latter not a complaint that’s common among California refugees, unless they left before the drought ended.

I was going to say with the exception of the weather, these are all problems caused wrong-headed leftist politicians, but now they’ve turned around and blamed voters for "climate change," so I suppose all the problems that make people leave a state can be attributed to human "mis-intervention."

The data the Tribune used puts most of the blame on population losses in the Chicago area.

In 2015 population declined for the first time since 1990. But that number is deceptive.

Chicago, a sanctuary city, has been propping up its population numbers by importing new illegal residents from Mexico. But evidently after a while in the Windy City, even they wise-up, and either leave or stop coming.

Although I’m sure the Tribune won’t admit it, it appears Donald Trump’s description of life in the ghetto may have been on the mark, too. The demographic group in Cook County that leads the charge for other states is black residents.

Over 9,000 blacks left the county and moved elsewhere "in search of more stable incomes, safe neighborhoods, and prosperity."

An intelligent governing class would study Texas, Florida, Arizona, Colorado, and South Carolina to see what those Trump states — with the exception of Colorado — are doing that is so attractive to new residents.

Unfortunately the operative word is "intelligent" and that’s sadly lacking in blue states.

There, ideology is much more important than reality.
