Higher Education Reeks of Hypocrisy

UCLA provides the most recent confirmation that “academic freedom” is only for the academics.

Students, on the other hand, are merely raw material for the left’s indoctrination machine.

The invaluable California Political Review has covered the two-stage controversy at UCLA. The first stage came when the College of Letters and Sciences voted 332 to 303 to require students to take a “diversity” class before being allowed to graduate.

In the context of these classes, “diversity” extends from the gradual socialism of the Democrat party all the way left to communism and possibly Pol Pot. A student wearing a “Che” T-shirt would be celebrated; a student wearing a Reagan T-shirt would just be berated.

During these publicly funded re-education classes academics will follow a curriculum designed to produce more leftists. Courageous students who dare to challenge the party line will risk retaliation from the instructor and condemnation from the sheep-like students who meekly absorb the propaganda.

Or as intrepid UCLA political science professor Thomas Schwartz told the Review, “Diversity is code for a certain set of politically correct or left-leaning attitudes on college campuses. There’s enough of that here. We don’t think students should ever be required to take an ideologically slanted or a politically slanted course.”

The proliferation of “studies” courses — that cover race, gender, critical theory, or unicorns — cheat students in two ways. First, the courses soak up valuable class time that could be used by a course that actually contained academic rigor. And two, graduates that major in “studies” are totally unprepared to face the world, better known as reality, with the worthless degree they have “earned.”

These courses are essentially the barista track for college students.

After the initial vote and the following 85 to 18 rubber-stamping by the Academic Senate, the course requirement was scheduled to take effect with the 2015 academic year. Previously enrolled students were fortunately grandfathered (there’s a term that reeks of the “patriarchy!”) out of the indoctrination sessions.

Then Prof. Schwartz attempted to come to the rescue. He started a petition to have the entire faculty vote on the proposal; the fact he failed is an additional indictment of higher education in California.

The Review puts the effort into perspective by reporting that out of a total of 1,000 professors at the university, only 54 joined Prof. Schwartz in his effort to require a vote of the entire faculty before brainwashing students.
