Obama Ramps Up the Nanny State

After five years of incessant and often-deserved criticism, President Barack Obama ought to be recognized for what he has accomplished.

Progressives have long envied France for its 35-hour workweek. Mr. Obama has bested this. Thanks to the enormous shift from full-time to part-time jobs caused by Obamacare and the drag on growth caused by anti-capitalist Obamanomics, America's average workweek has plummeted from 40 hours to nearly 29.5 hours . . . and millions now enjoy the leisure of having no job to go to at all. Laissez les bon temps rouler, Mr. President!

In earlier eras, young Americans were quick to fly from their childhood nest and take up adult independence as soon as they could. Thanks to Obamanomics, today a record 21.6 million millennials, unable to find jobs that pay adequate income, still live with Mom and Dad. The president's policies may be impoverishing and infantilizing young America, but he is keeping America's families closer.

President Obama has given young women a better provider as government and the welfare state "assume the role of spouse" in millions of single parent households.

By replacing men as providers and role models in America, President Obama's fast-growing government has reduced toxic testosterone and given us for the first time a nation in which 30 percent of working age males have no job — and are seeking none. He has unmanned America and set us on the road to a world peace based on gelded docility as we trade our manhood for welfare checks and submission.

President Obama is close to permanently tipping the balance in America from makers to takers, from the emerging minority who produce the wealth and pay the taxes to a new majority who pay no taxes and pocket government checks.

Thanks to Obama, 49 percent of American households now include someone who gets a government check, and 67 percent of every tax dollar now becomes "transfer payments" with which to buy Democratic votes.

This fundamental transformation of America will soon expunge capitalist materialism and greed and return us to a simpler age of egalitarian sharing of poverty. Soon we can all embrace the Obamaddiction to his hypnotic illusion that death panels produce health and printing limitless trillions in paper money out of thin air produces wealth. A wizard, indeed.

As part of his new era of "libertarian paternalism," President Obama this summer began assembling in the White House a team of neuroscientists, including some like Cass Sunstein, the wizard of "nudge," who helped elect and re-elect him.

These mind shapers are adept at the most sophisticated means of "manufacturing consent." This talent is urgently needed since the Rasmussen Poll found that 60 percent of Americans believe our federal government no longer has "the consent of the governed," which the Declaration of Independence said was the basis of any government's "only just powers."

As government surveillance identifies such misguided people, disarms them, and provides mental health treatment, all such dissent against Mr. Obama's progressive ideals will be swept away by the power of the progressive nanny state.

This power, wrote Alexis de Tocqueville in 1835 after imaging what would happen to America if we surrendered our self-reliant non-governmental institutions, would keep Americans "fixed irrevocably in childhood."

Through a maze of rules and regulations, wrote Tocqueville, the nanny state "does not break wills, but it softens them, bends them, and directs them; it rarely forces one to act, but it constantly opposes itself to one's acting; it does not destroy, it prevents things from being born; it does not tyrannize, it hinders, compromises, enervates, extinguishes, dazes, and finally reduces each nation to being nothing more than a herd of timid and industrious animals of which government is the shepherd."

Thanks to President Obama, Americans are now more timid than industrious, and like a herd of animals they can be stampeded by the illusion of crisis.

Thanks to President Obama we now have an answer to the question that ends our national anthem: "Oh, say, does that Star-spangled Banner yet wave o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?" The answer, depending on how Americans vote in 2014, is probably "No." That is up to you.
