Shedding Light on the NRA Recall of Grover Norquist

Newsmax’s chief political columnist and White House correspondent, John Gizzi, recently misreported in a Web-posted article that, “The NRA has examined all the criticisms of [Grover] Norquist and found them baseless [sic] and strongly [sic] urged all NRA members to vote no on the recall” of Norquist from the NRA board. Recall ballots must be received by May 1, 2016.

I know the above-quoted assertion to be factually incorrect not only because I represented the recall petitioner, former Army Green Beret officer, Stu Weber, in the NRA’s recall hearing. Having myself formerly served as the inspector general of the Department of Defense, I have also examined “all the criticisms of Norquist” and found them to be anything but baseless.

The bottom line of Stu Weber’s recall petitioner is this: “Grover Norquist has chosen to affiliate himself with various front organizations of the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States.” This and other compelling reasons to recall Mr. Norquist from the NRA board are published in the current issue the NRA’s American Rifleman magazine, along with the recall ballot.

Here are the reasons why the sentence of John Gizzi’s article quoted above is materially false:
  • The NRA did not find the criticisms of Norquist “baseless”; instead, the NRA panel opinion published in the current issue of American Rifleman concluded: “Since the claims made by the Petitioner are well in excess of a year old, we must reject the Petition's factual allegations for staleness,” i.e., not because they are baseless.
  • The NRA did not “strongly” urge all NRA members to vote “no” on the recall; instead the published NRA panel opinion simply concluded: “The Hearing Board recommends that NRA members vote no on the Recall Petition.”
  • The other misleading part of the Newsmax article by John Gizzi is that it suggests up front that, “the NRA itself and a ‘Who's Who’ of national conservative leaders have rallied Norquist's defense, saying the allegations are nonsense,” even though the NRA members have not yet voted, and without any mention of either Glenn Beck or a recently published letter to NRA members by Admiral Ace Lyons, USN (retired), identifying another “Who’s Who” of national security leaders who support the allegations against Grover Norquist, most of which involve his affiliation, one way or another, with various Muslim Brotherhood front organizations and operatives.
As pointed out in Admiral Lyons’ published “Open Letter to NRA Members,” the following “Who's Who” of “prominent national security professionals . . . call[ed] attention to [Grover Norquist’s] very troubling record back in February 2014”:
  • Former Attorney General Michael Mukasey
  • Former Director of Central Intelligence R. James Woolsey
  • Former U.S. Representative Allen West
  • Former federal prosecutor Andrew C. McCarthy
  • Former U.S. Ambassador Henry Cooper
  • Former Defense Department Inspector General Joseph Schmitz
  • Retired Lt. Gen. William "Jerry" Boykin
In Glenn Beck’s closing speech at CPAC last week, Glenn began be announcing that, “With the addition of Dr. Zuhdi Jasser on the board of directors, the Muslim Brotherhood moles are not going to be welcome here at CPAC anymore.”

Whether or not Grover Norquist is a Muslim Brotherhood mole on the NRA Board, as stated eloquently in recall petitioner Stu Weber’s published statement, “Grover Norquist has chosen to affiliate himself with various front organizations of the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States.”

Mr. Norquist has had plenty of due process, and multiple opportunities to distance himself from these Muslim Brotherhood front organizations, but he has failed to do so. That’s enough.

NRA members should vote yes on Stu Weber’s petition to recall Grover Norquist from the NRA Board.
