Hundreds of angry demonstrators marched outside the Loew’s Marriott Hotel in Philadelphia Friday afternoon, as President Donald Trump arrived to address House Republicans at their annual retreat.

“The president is not the people’s choice and the people he’s naming to important positions are ignorant,” Leah Winikur of Philadelphia told me. Specifically, she cited “the ignorant people he’s picked for his Cabinet. His choice for education secretary [school voucher advocate Betsy DeVos] is ignorant of public education beyond belief.”

Winikur also said she felt Trump’s choices to run the Energy and Health & Human Services departments (former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Georgia Rep. Tom Price) were “ignorant.”

“And I don’t like that [Trump] refuses to relinquish financial records, which could show how beholden he was to foreign leaders,” she told me, adding that “this was required by the Constitution.” (There is nothing in the Constitution requiring financial disclosure of a president or any U.S. official.)

“Do not allow that idiot to take our country away from us!” Eleanor Walker, a former member of the Pennsylvania Democratic State Committee, shouted into a bullhorn to wild cheers from the crowd. “I lived in Germany in the ’60s and I asked people how they could let Hitler come to power. They said they never thought it would happen and said ‘silly Hitler,’ the way we now say ‘silly Trump.’”

Walker later told me she especially disliked Trump for “the disrespect he showed women. [his language] devalues women. He’s sick.”

When I pointed out that Republicans counter the argument of Trump’s language by noting President Clinton admitted adultery and several women say he forced himself on them, she shot back: “That’s different. Eisenhower, George H.W. Bush all had mistresses. So what? The issue is disrespect.”
