The president’s proposed cuts to the Department of Housing and Urban Development will have grave consequences for homeless veterans, Mitch Landrieu, president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, told Newsmax on Wednesday.

Landrieu said the cuts would mean private charities would have to take up the slack to find housing for the veterans.

Speaking at a Washington press breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor, New Orleans Democratic Mayor Mitch Landrieu spelled out what may soon become a major cause for the nation’s big city mayors. “The proposed budget going forward that cuts across [federal, state, and local] governments is going to have a significant impact,” Landrieu predicted.

He specifically cited the burden shift to charities such as Catholic Charities, United Way, and The Salvation Army.

Landrieu expressed concern over the recent draft of President Trump’s proposed budget, which cuts the funding for the Department of Housing and Urban Development by $6 billion and would bring it down to $40 billion for fiscal year 2018.

“If the budget is implemented as recommended by the president,” he said, “we can tell you with certainty that the resources that were used to help veterans get off the streets are going to be gone. It's more likely that we're going to put veterans back on the streets.”

The two-term mayor pointed out that “if the federal government pulls back and there's a hole, somebody else has to fill the gap. That generally is private or not-for-profit concerns like Catholic Charities on the ground."

“We are always better when the federal government, the state government, local government, the not-for profits, the faith based community, are all at the table. When one of us does not show up, somebody else has to pick up the slack or somebody who is given an opportunity is not going to have it.”
