No sooner had President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he wants the Republican National Committee to choose Ronna Romney McDaniel as the party's new national chairman than analogies and contrasts were being made to her more famous uncle, 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

Easily the most dramatic contrast is that where Mitt Romney was a "Never Trumper" right from the GOP nomination fight through the general election, McDaniel, as state party chairman of Michigan, was a vigorous Trump campaigner from the moment the president-elect became their party's nominee for president.

On the day before the Michigan primary last March, Newsmax asked McDaniel if she felt the strong crossover votes from historically Democratic Michiganians was part of a scheme to nominate the weakest Republican candidate for the fall.

"If they vote for a Republican," McDaniel replied, "they are voting because they legitimately like that Republican."

Noting that her uncle Mitt had made clear his distaste for Trump as a nominee, we asked McDaniel if she would support the controversial front-runner if he becomes the nominee.

"Absolutely," she replied.

McDaniel was good to her word. She led canvasses of volunteers throughout the Water Wonderland and was on stage at every Trump rally. Trump himself usually acknowledged her and called the state chairman "my favorite Romney."

"Ronna had a family wedding on the Saturday before the election," recalled former Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., a longtime Romney family friend. "But she politely declined to attend because the Republicans were going to have a caravan of buses and cars through the state to encourage voter turnout."

McDaniel will be only the second woman to serve as Republican national chairman (the other was Mary Louise Smith, who held the RNC helm from 1974-77.)

McDaniel got her start as a Republican volunteer in the campaigns of her mother, Ronna Stern Romney, who was Republican National Committeewoman and a U.S. Senate candidate in 1994 and ’96.

In what was the shape of things to come, grandfather George Romney, governor of Michigan from 1963-69, made news in 1965 when he named Elly Peterson as the first Republican woman state party chairman of Michigan.
