Emmer First to Declare in Race for Bachmann Seat

One week after Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota made her bombshell revelation that she would not seek re-election in 2014, former state legislator and 2010 gubernatorial nominee Tom Emmer became the first Republican to throw his hat in the ring in Minnesota's Congressional Sixth District.

Three years ago, running as an unabashed social and fiscal conservative, Emmer lost one of the tightest races for governor anywhere against liberal Democrat Mark Dayton.

Should Emmer emerge as the Republican nominee for Congress, one Gopher State GOPer told Newsmax, "expect the Alliance for a Better Minnesota [a SuperPAC bankrolled in part by Dayton's former wife] to run harsh ads against him."

Although Emmer is popular among his party's grassroots activists, more moderate donors to the Republican Party still criticize him for what they felt was his fumbling a winnable run for governor in 2010.

It seems almost a foregone conclusion there will be a crowded nomination fight to succeed Bachmann. However, another Republican who had been mentioned for the congressional race, former state Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch, endorsed Emmer this week.
