Arizona Law Protects US From Gangs, Terrorists

It is said facetiously that the early American Indians had poor immigration laws and no border security. Today’s Arizonans, including a prominent Indian population, face an onslaught of criminal alien gangs.

In response to increasingly lax enforcement of U.S. immigration laws, the Arizona legislature has taken action. By passing immigration law SB 1070 in April 2010, the state signaled that it is circling the wagons to protect Arizonans.

SB 1070 mirrors current federal immigration law, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2005 that law enforcement officers did not need reasonable suspicion to ask for name, date of birth, or immigration status. Yet a similar provision in the Arizona law has caused an uproar nationwide and abroad.

When Gov. Jan Brewer had the pioneer spunk to sign the Arizona bill into law, all hell broke loose. The radical left, the liberal newsmedia, anarchists, and immigrant advocates were quick to condemn the legislation.

They were joined by the president of the United States, the U.S. Attorney General, and the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, who condemned the law while claiming they had not read it. To admit to having read the law would have required them to acknowledge that SB 1070 mirrors federal law.

Most recently, they were joined in their condemnation of the Arizona law by the president of Mexico and by a U.S. undersecretary of state, who apologized “early and often” for the Arizona law during a meeting with Chinese diplomats.

Before voting on SB 1070, Arizona legislators held hearings on the bill and the border violence leading up to it. Legislators heard details of the murder of a respected rancher gunned down on his own land. Testimony included accounts of 300 to 1,200 illegal aliens a day trespassing on one ranch, stealing vehicles, killing farm animals, and damaging the fragile ecology of the Arizona desert. Another rancher found the bodies of 17 illegal aliens and two copies of the Quran on his property.

Another rancher testified that many crossings are made by drug-smugglers operating in military fashion with heavily armed scouts or point men followed by heavily armed front guards, then by carts or human “mules” carrying the drugs, followed by a rear guard also heavily armed. This is happening in the United States of America, while the U.S. Border Patrol stands by with its hands bureaucratically tied.

Ranchers testified that the U.S. Border Patrol operates check points some 60 miles north of the border but that agents are not allowed to use force in stopping anyone entering the country. Only under direct fire may they un-holster their weapons, a policy established during the Clinton administration.

Criminal alien gangs are well-versed in U.S. immigration policy, and the U.S.-Mexico border is now not secure, nor has it been for 24 years.

The southern border is a national security disgrace. Hispanic gangs are now the most powerful criminal operatives in Arizona, in the United States, and increasingly in much of the world. These gangs are recruiting Hispanics born in the United States.

The U.S. Department of Justice National Gang Intelligence Center (NGIC) and the FBI estimate that 80 percent of all U.S. crimes, including identity theft, robbery, violent assaults, kidnapping, torture, rape, and murder, are committed by criminal gangs, many of whose members are in the country illegally.

For the past decade, the U.S. House of Representatives has held hearings on international criminal gangs. Each year, testimony has shown that these gangs are becoming larger, more violent, more sophisticated, better organized, armed with better intelligence, and displaying the hallmarks of terrorist training and relationships.

A congressional report, issued in 2005, concluded that border integrity was lacking and that porous U.S. borders were providing easy passage for gang members.

Dominating the gangs is MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha), founded in Los Angeles by El Salvadorians and active in Arizona. It has an estimated membership of 20,000 members nationwide and hundreds of thousands worldwide. MS-13, though not the largest Hispanic gang, is hands down the most violent.

Organized crime experts observe that criminal alien gangs make the Italian Mafia look like choir boys.

In addition to drug smuggling, MS-13 appears to have a pact with al-Qaida to smuggle sleeper or deep-cover agents into the United States. These agents blend into local communities and await instructions to carry out terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. Muslim terrorists use forged Social Security cards, drivers licenses, and Matricula Consular cards (ID cards issued by the Mexican government).

Federal and state agencies in the United States accept these various identification papers — many of them forgeries — so as not to offend foreign nationals. Congressional hearings have established that Matricula Consular ID cards enable terrorists to move freely within the United States without triggering watch-lists, and Mexican officials acknowledge that Spanish and Islamic terrorist groups are operating in their country.

The inescapable conclusion is that the federal government must secure U.S. borders. Gang members deported one day return the next. U.S. borders remain wide open, and Arizona has become the main pathway for foreign nationals entering the United States illegally. Phoenix now ranks first in the nation for kidnappings, an increasingly popular money-making scheme of criminal alien gangs.

It is high time to circle the wagons.
