New Mexico National Monument: New Pathway for Illegal Entry

President Barack Obama, on May 20, opened yet another pathway at the southern border for Mexican Drug Cartels (MDC) and other undocumented foreign nationals, by providing them unimpeded access to the United States.

He did this by declaring the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks region in New Mexico as a new national monument, bordering on the south with Mexico. In describing this 500,000-acre national monument, the president noted, “One of the great blessings of being an American is that we are blessed with some of the most beautiful landscapes and real estate on Earth.”

As for the monument’s mountains, he said, “They are a spectacular sight. You’ve got massive rocks that jut up to 9,000 feet in the air and stretch for 90 miles, like organ pipes of a giant.”

New Mexico’s neighbor, Arizona, is itself home to the Organ Pipe Cactus National monument, also on the border with Mexico. For the past 12 years, Arizona has seen this national treasure along with other federal border lands serve as “pathways” for alien smuggling, drug smuggling, and entries into the United States by foreign criminal gangs.

Why? One answer is that national monuments are “off-limits” to U.S. Border Patrol agents. Since 2002, these “beautiful landscapes” and their surroundings have been the sites of killings and woundings of U.S. Park Rangers and U.S. Border Patrol agents. Also, tons of litter left by undocumented aliens and drug smugglers must be collected each week.

New Mexico can expect the same. Instead of preserving the pristine beauty of these fragile ecosystems, as environmentalists describe them, the president’s action has created in New Mexico yet another protected “pathway” for illegal criminal activity.

Undocumented aliens, drug smugglers, and criminal gang members too often don’t give a hoot about the damage they do to southern border ecosystems. Besides trampling the vegetation, these “criminals” use vehicles that tear up desert plants and shrubbery, especially cacti, and kill native wildlife. Yet not one word of protest is heard from environmentalists.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) estimates that 65-70 percent of the illegal drugs coming into the United States cross the southern border. Look for New Mexico to become another major “alien and drug pathway” used by foreign nationals trashing fragile U.S. ecosystems.

The Chairman of the Association of Retired Border Patrol Officers stated that creation of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National monument was the largest breach of Border Security he had seen in 20 years. He repeated what locals say, they don’t want the national monument, and the sheriffs don’t want it. Illegal alien smugglers, Mexican Drug Cartels (MDCs), and criminal street gangs like MS-13 are happy with the absence of law enforcement.

The head of the National Border Patrol Council states that federal lands well north of the border are overrun by armed criminals. Thus, U.S. citizens are being warned to keep out of many federal parks, forests, and wildlife refuges, and this situation has existed for a decade.

The MDCs and other criminals are using federal lands as their own “pathways to citizenship” for undocumented foreign nationals. Along the 1,952-mile Mexican-U.S. border, thousands of drug smugglers and undocumented foreign nationals cross into the United States unchallenged each day.

The largest border-crossing points for drug cartels and foreign nationals entering the United States illegally are on federal lands in Arizona and now New Mexico. Estimates are that illegal drugs worth between $18 billion and $39 billion pass through these federal lands each year along with 400,000 illegal aliens.

To date, the Obama administration, with the support of congressional Democrats, has chosen to downplay these criminal actions that increase drug abuse and drug-related crime in the United States.

As early as 2009, the Obama administration knew of this federal lands abuse.Gil Kerlikowske, chief of President Obama’s Office of National Drug Control Policy, acknowledged that “Mexican drug trafficking organizations have been operating on public lands to cultivate marijuana, with serious consequences for the environment and public safety.”

As of May 20, 2014, the Obama administration has responsibility for more than 300 million acres of federal lands, of which 20.7 million acres lie along the U.S.-Mexican border. Yet the president and his political appointees seem to have no clear idea of how to manage these national treasures. They talk the environmentalist talk while introducing policies that fail to protect federal lands.

As one New Mexico rancher said, “This is constant déjà vu — the Veterans Administration, Benghazi, the IRS, and Fast and Furious — gross ignorance.”

In 2013, the U.S. Border Patrol made 420,789 apprehensions on the southern border, with unapprehended entries estimated to be three times that number. The number of unaccompanied, undocumented youths is on the rise. In 2014, an estimated 127,000 unaccompanied youths are expected to enter the United States, youths not likely to be deported.

Ignorance or incompetence on the part of the federal government? Either way, the Obama administration, by increasing unguarded wilderness on the southern border, is jeopardizing national security.
