Obama's Utopian Dream Is Socialism

On Saturday morning, July 4, 2015, at a supermarket on the Gulf Coast of Florida, a checkout-line conversation was underway, touching on current events.

The chatty checkout cashier (a former business owner) opined that President Obama is doing a kabuki dance on foreign affairs, national debt, national security, immigration, race relations, and education. By casting a shadow on legislative prerogatives, the president is expanding his agenda of government control.

That got the ball rolling in the checkout line. A forty-something woman in tennis garb chimed in that, although you wouldn’t know it from the media coverage, the average U.S. citizen is questioning the Obama Administration’s bureaucratic end-runs and arrogance; and she wondered about the President’s daily rants and Air Force One trips.

A white-haired man, moving up in line, laughed and responded that it’s the same old malarkey. Air Force One is an escape from reality. The president keeps flying across the country to play golf and raise money. He acts as if he believes that most Americans are homophobic racists, that Republicans are the real nut jobs, and that only he has the truth.

The tennis lady noted that she believed in the president and voted for him twice, but that he keeps promising one thing but doing another. Look at the schools, she said, no reading, writing, or arithmetic — just social butterflying.

A recent college graduate, pushing his grocery cart forward, piped in, saying that at his state university, half the incoming classes can’t spell cat. He noted that many recent graduates are stuck in entry-level jobs — if they have a job. Fortunately, he has a job in Texas.

The white-haired man added that he just read an online San Francisco Chronicle article captioned, “Trump Says S.F. Pier Killing Shows He’s Right on Immigration.” It’s unusual for some papers to even mention such a story — an illegal alien killing a young lady for no reason, and this illegal alien had been deported five times and seven felony convictions.

Worse yet, the San Francisco police had released him from jail, even when the feds had a detainer on him, political correctness run amok. After a moment, he continued, “Frisco is a sanctuary city, illegal aliens have safe haven from deportation there. Only in America!”

A middle-aged man with two children picked up on the political correctness theme, noted that civility is gone from the public schools, where they are teaching sex but no real education, only the social intolerance of whites. Many schools can’t teach the basics, because the teachers themselves are uneducated.

There is no responsibility in the school system, and dangerous, harmful acts are tolerated, because we can’t made judgments, even if their acts hurt; and this is today’s education system.

A woman with a cane agreed and said that, even worse, we, you and I, have caused it. Just like Germany and Russia, where the people did not speak up. Where is the American voice?

A senior-citizen bagger added, “Look what’s happened at the Veterans Administration. I’m a vet. I don’t ask for much, only decent medical care, but that’s a laugh.” The college grad spoke again, asking the bagger, “Out of curiosity, what did you do before bagging?”

The bagger moved his head slowly and said that he did some banking. “Some banking?” the college grad asked. The bagger answered that he was “a financial officer for, let’s say, a Fortune 500 company,” and with a smirk, he added, “but not a fortunate 500 company."

That quip brought a laugh from the adjacent checkout lines and cashiers who had been
listening. The cashier, who had started the conversation, opined that President Obama is an empty suit. He’s been leading from behind so long he thinks he’s back in Indonesia. Look at the world.

A bald fiftyish man opined that young people had been getting their information from Jon Stewart, a comedian; that they believe Obama is the "fountain of truth,” that their attention span is a minute or so, and Obama capitalizes on that.

A twenty-something young woman wearing a Yale T-shirt countered, saying that Obama is right; the country is racist and homophobic. Looking around, she added that the people in line were dinosaurs and added, “Sorry, this is the truth. Young people want peace, love, and everyone having food, a home, and money, even if the government gives it, and the rich pay for it. Freedom for all, including all foreign comers and amnesty for them.”

The college grad laughed at her utopian poppycock and noted that someone has to work to pay the bills. He suggested that she take a look at what’s happening in Greece and added, “Yalee, wake-up and get off the grass.”
