WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is canceling plans to attend international meetings in Italy and Greece this week as she recovers from surgery to repair a broken elbow.
Clinton sustained the injury in a fall at the State Department Wednesday. She had surgery on Friday.
Clinton is recovering but is not up to making the trip for a series of meetings on major issues such as Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Israel-Palestinian peace process, Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg told reporters .
Steinberg said he will lead the U.S. delegation to a set of meetings in Greece and William Burns, the under secretary of state for political affairs, will head the U.S. delegation to separate talks in Italy.
