WASHINGTON -- Ninety-one-year-old Sen. Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia has been hospitalized with what his office says is a spike in temperature.
In a statement, Byrd's office says he was hospitalized late Friday, is being treated with antibiotics and is expected to be released in a few days.
The statement says that according to doctors, the temperature spike was caused by a minor infection.
The West Virginia Democrat has been in Congress for more than a half-century. He stepped down in November as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
