Rep. Price: Nothing Off Limits in Budget Battle

By Henry J. Reske and Kathleen Walter   |   Saturday, 12 Feb 2011 11:08 AM

House GOP battles on what and how much to cut from the federal budget are part of the system and a welcome change from the top-down methods employed by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Thomas Price, R-Ga., tells Newsmax.TV. The chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee said there can no longer be any sacred cows when it comes to reducing the deficit.

“What we’ve had the last four years under Speaker Pelosi has been a top-down philosophy in Congress,” he said in an interview at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C. “So that she would tell her representatives, the members of her caucus, what to do. That’s not going to happen anymore. So what we’re seeing is a process we haven’t seen in a long time.”

The discourse among Republicans over how much government spending to cut is the way it should be, says Georgia Republican Tom Price, chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee. He spoke to Newsmax.TV at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C.
Budget cuts of $100 billion are possible, entitlement spending must be addressed and balancing the budget must be the goal, he said, adding that even defense spending should not be off limits.

“Everything’s got to be on the table,” he said. “But in terms of defense we need to make certain that we fulfill our responsibility to make certain America is indeed safe and secure. But there are so many things when you drill down into that defense budget where you can save money based upon the procurement process, or the bureaucracy that has built up within the Defense Department. There are so many things in the Defense Department that don’t actually contribute to our nation’s defense. And those are the areas we should be cutting.”
