Gov. Sebelius Attacked for Radical Abortion Views

By Dave Eberhart   |   Monday, 02 Mar 2009 06:34 PM

A women’s organization has blasted President Barack Obama’s choice of Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius as Secretary of Health and Human Services, citing what it says is her pro-abortion history.

Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America (CWA), which touts itself as the nation’s largest public policy women’s organization that helps its members “bring Biblical principles into all levels of public policy,” charged in an email:

“President Obama is proving himself to be the most pro-abortion president in history with his nomination of … Sebelius as Secretary of Health and Human Services.”

Wright goes on to enumerate what she portrays as the nominee’s shortcomings:

  • Kathleen Sebelius vetoed common-sense regulations on abortion -- including safety regulations to protect patients from filthy conditions found in a Kansas abortion clinic.

  • She vetoed strengthening the state’s parental notification law.

  • When it was discovered that late-term abortionists George Tiller and Kansas Planned Parenthood were probably committing illegal acts, she vetoed legislation to hold them accountable.

  • She hand-picked an attorney general for his promise to end investigations of late-term abortionists. He later resigned in a sex scandal. Her next attorney general got a court order forbidding a witness from testifying on evidence against her favored abortionists.

  • She won the governorship with large donations from late-term abortionist Tiller, who is currently on trial for alleged criminal activity.

  • She also appointed another abortionist, Howard Ellis, who gave up his medical license in Missouri to avoid disciplinary action to the Kansas Board of Healing Arts.

What’s more, argued Wright, Sibelius “even held a private party in the Governor’s mansion for George Tiller, and danced in a conga line with Planned Parenthood’s CEO at their fundraiser for her.”

According to various media reports, Sebelius did, indeed, in 2007 hold a reception for Dr. George Tiller at the governor’s mansion in Topeka. Tiller, who once received the National Abortion Federation's highest honor, is presently facing charges relating to his practice.

Recently, according to a CNN report, a district judge denied a motion to dismiss the case, meaning Tiller will go to trial on 19 misdemeanor counts relating to how he procured second opinions for late-term abortions.

Wright implores that any and all who receive her email immediately call their Senators and register their distaste for the appointment.

“Her track record of giving preferential treatment to abortionists who are under investigation for criminal activity makes her a dangerous choice to be overseer of the country’s top agency for health and human services,” Wright concluded.

Although most pundits agree that abortion may well dominate her confirmation hearings, some are defending her stance on the volatile issue.

According to a report by CNN, the liberal group Catholics United has come to Sebelius’ defense, saying the Kansas chief executive undertook several measures to lower the abortion rate in her state.

The group also has posted excerpts of a 2006 speech in which Sebelius said she opposed abortion.

“My Catholic faith teaches me that all life is sacred, and personally I believe abortion is wrong,” she said in that address. “However, I disagree with the suggestion that criminalizing women and their doctors is an effective means of achieving the goal of reducing the number of abortions in our nation.”
