Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, two potential Republican presidential nominees in 2012, both lead President Barack Obama in a new CNN poll.

Romney, Huckabee, Obama, 2012, poll, cnnThe survey of registered voters — conducted by Opinion Research Corporation and completed two days before the midterm elections — showed former Arkansas Gov. Huckabee leading Obama, 52 percent to 44 percent, and former Massachusetts Gov. Romney with a 50-to-45-percent lead over the president.

CNN polls in April showed Obama leading both Republicans.

The new poll released on Thursday also found that nearly one quarter of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents would prefer that the Democratic Party nominate a candidate other than Obama in 2012.

Asked if the Democrats should renominate Obama as the party’s candidate in 2012, 73 percent said they should choose Obama, 22 percent said they should nominate a different candidate, and 5 percent had no opinion.

When Republicans were asked who they would prefer as the GOP nominee for president in 2012, 21 percent chose Huckabee, 20 percent said Romney, 14 percent named 2008 vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, 12 percent opted for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and 7 percent chose Texas Congressman Ron Paul.

While the CNN survey showed Huckabee and Romney leading Obama, it also found Obama with an edge over Gingrich, 49 percent to 47 percent, and over Palin, 52 percent to 44 percent. But Obama’s leads over Gingrich and Palin are down significantly from April.
