Cain: 'False Accusations' Lost Family Leader Endorsement

By    |   Sunday, 27 Nov 2011 10:32 AM

GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain blames “false accusations” against him alleging sexual harassment prompted the conservative Iowa Family Leader to refuse to endorse him.

The former Godfather’s Pizza CEO, responding to CNN “State of the Union” host Candy Crowley’s question today about why the Family Leader wouldn’t endorse him, responded: “Obviously false accusations and confusion about some of my positions has contributed to it and that was to be expected. In terms of the mechanics of the campaign, nothing has gone wrong.”

The harassment accusations, which he denies, came from women when he was head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s.

Asked whether he hadn’t advanced a pro-choice abortion position during a recent interview when asked his view if the mother’s life were at risk, Cain said his response was taken out of context.

“The interview where it was taken out of context was a hypothetical situation,” Cain said.

However, he acknowledged that he did say the decision to get an abortion should be up to a woman if her life were at risk.

His "poor choice of words" was blown out of proportion, Cain said.

On another volatile issue during the program, Cain rejected suggestions that his “targeted identification” policy on immigration amounts to racial profiling.

During the GOP national security debate last week, Cain said his policy aims to determine the identity of terrorists.

“I don’t see it as racial profiling, that’s why I used the term targeted identification,” Cain told Crowley. “Targeted identification is a deliberate approach to figure out patterns associated with people who have tried to kill us.”

He denied that his proposal targets Middle Easterners, saying: “I’m not trying to identify a particular religion, a particular color, a particular ethnicity. I’m simply saying we should not be afraid to identify those characteristics that have basically been consistent in people who have tried to hurt this country.”
