-- THE RACE: The presidential race in Michigan ___ THE NUMBERS Barack Obama, 43 percent John McCain, 41 percent ___ OF INTEREST: More Michigan voters thought well of McCain than Obama, with 58 percent having a favorable opinion of the Arizona senator compared to 51 percent for Obama. Independent Ralph Nader or Libertarian Bob Barr, currently polling in single digits, could be spoilers if the race remains tight; Democrat John Kerry beat President Bush in Michigan by just 3 percentage points in 2004. An earlier EPIC-MRA poll in mid-May had McCain at 44 percent and Obama at 40 percent, although Obama had a slight lead in a mid-June poll conducted by Quinnipiac University. ___ The telephone poll was conducted July 13-15 by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA for The Detroit News and TV stations WXYZ, WILX, WOOD and WJRT.
