Democrats are trying to raise money for a key congressional race in Pennsylvania by casting it as a crusade to fend off the efforts of “wing nut” Sarah Palin.
A letter from Democratic political consultant and former Bill Clinton adviser Paul Begala, sent to potential supporters on Monday, asks for donations to the campaign of Mark Critz, who is battling Republican Tim Burns for the seat formerly held by Rep. John Murtha. The election is Tuesday.
The letter begins: “Sarah Palin is at it again.
“This time she's trying to send one of her far-right tea party activists to take the Congressional seat held by the late John Murtha.
“Palin and her fellow right wingers understand the symbolic and political power of winning the seat held by Jack Murtha. To replace that fearless Marine with a feckless Sarah Palin wannabe would be tragic. But Ms. Palin thinks she can see victory from her front porch.”
The letter asks for donations of $10 or more, which will be matched dollar-for-dollar by “a group of committed Democrats.”
The letter states: “With this special election just 24 hours from now, far-right Republicans are making this contest ground zero in their campaign to win a right-wing majority in Congress.
“Republican wing-nuts like Newt Gingrich, former Senator Rick Santorum, and, of course, half-term Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, are spreading fear and lies about Democrat Mark Critz and President Obama . . .
“The Republican candidate, Tim Burns, is parroting the Palin talking points. (And don't you kind of worry about someone who gets his talking points from the Wasilla Winston Churchill?)”
