Former House Budget Committee chairman turned Ohio Governor John Kasich says when it comes to fixing the economy "not everything needs to be a cut," according to a report in The Hill.

Kasich says Republicans should not call tax reform which generates revenues a tax increase, adding though that "revenue can't be used for more spending." Kasich also points out Democrats need to be more open to reforms.

The Ohio governor talks in the interview about how close Republican leaders and the White House were to achieving agreement on a deficit cutting deal totaling 4 trillion dollars. Kasich recalled how during a much publicized golf outing he took part in with President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, "I actually think they were close to an agreement."

That deal in the end fell through and the parties settled for a 2.1 trillion dollar deficit cutting plan. Kasich emphasized in the interview "people of the other party are not the enemy....look for areas to agree upon."

Kasich also didn't make much of this week's political spat between the White House and House Speaker John Boehner over the day the president originally chose to speek to a joint session of Congress on jobs creation. After Boehner refused to speak on Wednesday, the same day of a Republican presidential debate at the Reagan Library in California, Obama moved his congressional address to Thursday, the same night the National Football League kicks off its regular season.

Boehner said during the interview that the House Speaker "doesn't plan those games."
