Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tells Newsmax that Republicans can recover quickly from recent setbacks if they focus on positive solutions to the nation’s problems.
Gingrich also said the current House speaker, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, has “never seen a taxpayer she didn’t want to take money from.” [Editor's Note: See the full Gingrich interview - Go Here Now].
Newsmax’s Ashley Martella noted that Gingrich led the so-called “Republican Revolution” in 1994 that won the Senate and House for the GOP, and asked if Gingrich feels 2010 could be another 1994.
“Absolutely,” Gingrich declared.
“I think a Republican Party which recognizes that it needs to be part of the party of the American people, needs to represent the American people — not big government and special interests — a Republican Party that comes up with positive solutions that meet the needs of the American people, will recover very rapidly.
“And frankly, if the Democrats keep drifting to the left as they have with recent appointments and with this bloated $900 billion monstrosity of a spending bill — that’s President Obama’s own phrase, a spending bill — I think the Democrats are going to turn people off.
“But the Republicans need to be positive-solution oriented and address the needs of the American people in order to turn people on.”
Martella observed that as negotiations proceeded on the stimulus bills in the House and Senate, Nancy Pelosi appeared unwilling to cut any spending from the plans.
“I think Speaker Pelosi is a classic San Francisco liberal,” Gingrich responded.
“I think she goes home to one of the most left-wing cities in America. She goes to cocktail parties with very liberal friends. All of them believe that there is nothing that more big government cannot solve.
“She flies back and forth now on a government plane, which I think is wrong. One place she could cut government spending would be to allow the speaker to fly commercially, which is what I did…
“I think as a liberal, big-city Democrat she’s never seen a government program she didn’t love, and she’s never seen a taxpayer she didn’t want to take money from.”
Martella asked what Gingrich would tell Capitol Hill Republicans.
“I would advise them to worry about America,” Gingrich said.
“Don’t worry about the Republican Party. If they worry about America, if they solve problems for America, if they represent the American people, then the American people will take care of them.”
