Dems Turn on Each Other Over Campaign Spending

Thursday, 21 Oct 2010 12:39 PM

With Democratic candidates struggling in the polls, it’s not too surprising that spats are erupting over campaign money. For example, Hispanic organizers in hotly contested states say they’re receiving little cash from the Democratic National Committee, despite the DNC’s claim that it’s spending more money on efforts to bring in Latino voters than in any other mid-term election, Politico reports.

Show us some of the money, the moderates say.

As for the Hispanic groups, they weren’t expecting a repeat of two years ago, when the DNC and President Barack Obama’s campaign committed $20 million to help bring Hispanics to the polls. But the groups say the decline has been massive.

“I’ve never seen the investment so anemic,” says Jorge Mursuli, president and CEO of Democracia-Ahora, a Miami-based group that works in seven states. “It is like night and day. I think it is going to be devastating.”

The slide in spending strengthens Latino concerns that Democrats are taking their votes for granted, especially after failing to adopt immigration reform legislation.

Meanwhile, the moderates are ticked off at Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman of California, Energy and Environment Subcommittee Chairman Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Health Subcommittee Chairman Frank Pallone of New Jersey for not doling out more cash.

The moderates are particularly miffed because the three were principal writers of the cap-and-trade bill and healthcare plan that are causing so much trouble for moderate candidates. One senior Democratic aide views the troika as the “three horsemen of the apocalypse.”
