Chelsea Clinton: Heed Dad's Wake-Up Call, I Hope He Lives Forever

Monday, 26 Sep 2011 01:11 PM

Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton has become an ambassador for healthy lifestyles, advocating that people eat well and exercise, partly because of what she describes as her father’s “wake-up call” when he had heart surgery in 2005.

After former President Bill Clinton’s surgery, “he became much more diligent about taking long walks and going to the gym and going on hikes with my mom and their dogs,” Chelsea says of her dad and mother, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. “Starting a couple years ago, he really made a commitment to and a concerted effort to eat healthier.”

Chelsea made the comments to Yahoo! News during a tour Friday of PS 123 Elementary School in Brooklyn, where she presented the school with bronze medal from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The William J. Clinton Foundation helped found with the American Heart Association after his surgery.

Urging students to form healthy habits, Chelsea said: "I am profoundly grateful that my dad makes different choices now. Selfishly, now I hope he lives forever. I am sure every child feels that way."

Chelsea’s appearance was part of the run-up to the former president’s "A Decade of Difference" concert, that Yahoo will broadcast on Oct. 15 to note his recent 65th birthday and honor the 10th anniversary of the Clinton Foundation.

Also during the interview, Chelsea talks about the inspiration she draws from her grandmother.
