A Boston women's shelter cut comedienne and Obama supporter Sandra Bernhard from its annual benefit after she said Sarah Palin would be gang-raped if she ever visited New York.
The comment was the latest in a series of remarks that have gotten liberals yanked off of websites or fired for making crude remarks involving Palin in defense of Obama.
Earlier this week, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation apologized for a column that said Palin was chosen to appease the Republican party's "rural," "unlettered" and "white trash" base and said that the vice-presidential nominee looked like a "porn actress." The writer was a Canadian columnist who previously has written the United States will one day invade Canada for its natural resources.
Bernhard's made the remarks last month during her one-woman show in Washington D.C., before Palin visited New York to campaign. Bernhard said Palin would be "gang-raped by my big black brothers" during a diatribe in which she also criticized Palin for opposing abortion rights.
Many guests at Rosie's Place, a Boston shelter, have been victims of violence, public relations director Leemarie Mosca said.
"In light of our mission, we don't think violence against women is a laughing matter," she said.
But on her website, Bernhard described her comedy as dealing with “racism, freedom, women's rights, and the extreme views of Governor Sarah Palin -- a woman who doesn't believe that other women should have the right to choose.
"I certainly wish Governor Palin no harm -- I'd just like her to explain to me how she can hold such outrageous views ... and then go back to Alaska," Bernhard wrote.
Writing on the conservative website Pajamas Media, blogger Mike Shelton said with friends like these, Obama doesn’t need enemies.
“They must make the liberals of the past, Hubert H. Humphrey, Henry Jackson, and Robert F. Kennedy, among others, spin in their graves,” Shelton wrote. “Barack Obama must cringe and wish some of his ‘friends’ would crawl back into their shells and go away.
“Obama needs to tell his “friends” to straighten up and fly right,” Shelton added. “Those supporters who pass from sanity to derangement in their stridency will blame the candidate if he loses, saying he wasn’t tough enough. But in truth, more and more of them are the bumblers stepping in the paint bucket.”
