Axelrod: Afghan Plan Deeper Than Troop Surge

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A senior White House adviser says President Barack Obama's talks on Afghanistan with top national security advisers run much deeper than the question of sending additional troops into the war.

Presidential adviser David Axelrod said Friday night that "a lot of different factors" are being considered in the internal discussions including allegations of fraud in Afghanistan's recent presidential election and America's strained relationship with Pakistan.

Axelrod, in a speech at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, said he could not say when a decision would be made on whether to send more troops to the war zone.

Obama is reviewing a request of Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the war's top commander, for as many as 40,000 additional troops.
