Laura to Michelle: ‘Careful What You Say’

First Lady Laura Bush cautions Michelle Obama, wife of the presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama, to be careful what she says while campaigning for her husband during this year’s presidential election.

In an interview with ABC News’ “Good Morning, America,” Bush defends the Senator from Illinois’ wife for remarks made last February that she was proud of the United States “for the first time in my adult life.”

Saying Obama’s remarks were “misconstrued,” Bush defends Michelle Obama for her blunder.

“I think she probably meant,’ I'm more proud,’” Bush says, referring to how proud [Michelle Obama] was that Americans were engaging in the political process as never before. Obama later clarified the remark, saying she had always been proud of her country.

Bush says, “That's one of the really difficult parts both of running for president, and for being the spouse of the president. Everything you say is looked at and, in many cases, misconstrued."

She cautions, “You have to be really careful what you say. That's one of the things you learn over time, and that is to be pretty careful.”

Bush also has words of advice for Michelle Obama as she continues to speak out in support of her husband.

“Every issue ends up being legitimate to a campaign, whether they're legitimate or not. They get brought up. I think it's very hard to say we can't talk about this or can't talk about that. People are going to talk about it anyway.”

Bush also praises Hillary Clinton for her long, determined campaign to be the first female president elected to the White House, saying the Senator from New York "did great".

“I watched the campaign and I admired Hillary’s grit and strength,” she says. “Of course, I want the woman president to be a Republican woman, but I have to say I had a lot of admiration for her endurance,” she adds.

The First Lady is accompanying her husband, President Bush, on a weeklong farewell tour of Europe, which is hosting the annual U.S.-European Union summit. After a stop Monday in Slovenia, Afghanistan, they will continue on to Berlin, Rome, Paris and London.
