Lovers of white wine may soon be able to get the same cardiovascular benefits as those who drink red wine. Red wine has been shown to be rich in antioxidants that fight heart disease. It lowers the risk of a heart attack, and if you are unlucky enough to have one, it may lower your risk of having another. Studies have shown red wine can also raise your levels of HDL (good cholesterol) and lower LDL (bad cholesterol).
White wine lags behind its “heartier” brother, since it is not made with grape skins. Grape skins give red wine its color and contain heart-healthy polyphenol compounds. But scientists at Technion, the Israeli Institute of Technology, have found a way to boost the polyphenols in wine 600 percent by incubating squeezed grapes in alcohol for eighteen hours before removing their skins. The wine produced by the new method tastes and looks like regular white wine, but contains the same amount of antioxidants found in red wine.
The new white wine is expected to be available in the United States by the end of the year.
