A new skin patch will tell women the exact moment they are most likely to conceive. The DuoFertility device measures minute changes in body temperature that indicate when a woman is most fertile.
The patch, which is about the size of a quarter, is placed on the skin close to a bra strap where it charts the body’s basal temperature and monitors tiny changes – about half a degree – which spike when ovulation occurs. Information is read with a sensor that is similar to bar code scanners used in grocery stores.
The new fertility monitor predicts fertility far more accurately than any method now on the market, and is more convenient. Currently, women who use monitors have to take a daily urine sample or wake very early and measure their basal body temperature.
“Charting body basal temperature is often the first step that we recommend to our patients to promote conception as it not only helps them to identify the best time to try, but also it confirms that ovulation has occurred,” said Dr. David Naumann, co-founder of the firm that produces the patch.
The device is expensive at about $1,000, but could save couples who are having difficulty conceiving thousands of dollars on fertility treatments. It is expected to go on sale later this year.
