Does Omega-3 Raise Prostate Cancer Risk?

The media rarely gets a medical story correct. The recent news item concerning a study that reported a possible link between omega-3 oil levels in the blood and aggressive prostate cancer is a perfect case in point.

One of the first things you learn in medicine is that correlation does not necessarily mean causation. For instance, back in the 1960s, people with lupus were found to have telephones more often than those who did not have the disease. But no causation was implied — it was just an observation.

In the recent omega-3 study, researchers compared blood levels of omega-3 fatty acids to rates of prostate cancer. But in fact, all of the people in the study had low omega-3 fatty acid levels in their blood, though some in a higher range than others.

So they were not looking at the effect of high fish oil levels. Other factors known to be related to prostate cancer risk and aggressiveness were not even examined.

he real question to be asked is this: Why was this study ever funded in the first place? It provides no useful information at all. It may well be that the EPA component of the oil makes prostate cancer grow faster, as it does suppress immunity.

But DHA, in a number of studies, has been shown to inhibit prostate cancer.
