Arthritis Meds Increase Cancer Risk

Q: Is there a link between arthritis medication and brain tumors?
— Don M., Farragut, Iowa

A: Arthritis medications block an inflammatory cytokine called tumor necrosis factor-alpha, or TNF-alpha. Some years ago, this cytokine was found to destroy tumor cells as well as infectious organisms.

Later, it was learned that blocking this cytokine could dramatically improve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The problem with the arthritis drugs is that they suppress TNF-alpha so severely that it leaves the patient at a serious risk of fatal infections and rapid growth of cancers.

There are other, safer ways to reduce inflammation; these include curcumin, quercetin, ellagic acid, hesperidin, natural form vitamin E, buffered vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids (especially ones high in EPA and DHA), and high-dose vitamin D3, a powerful immunomodulator. Vitamin D3 is also a powerful antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal, and it suppresses many tumors, especially brain tumors.

Diets high in omega-6 oils increase inflammation and make rheumatoid arthritis worse, as does high iron intake. People with RA are also severely deficient in magnesium. Supplementing with magnesium reduces inflammation and pain, and improves mobility.

It has also been shown that certain antibiotics can improve RA. At first, doctors thought that the disease was caused by an infection. Now it is known that these antibiotics — such as doxycycline and minicycline — actually suppress the immune cell, called a macrophage, which is the real culprit in RA.

This treatment can completely cure some people. It is also vital to take probiotics (such as Theralac) during antibiotic treatment, and with RA in general because these beneficial gut bacteria can reduce joint inflammation. One should also be tested for food allergies, which can worsen the condition in RA sufferers.

Q: Is there compelling research against fluoride and fluoride pills?
— Catherine M., Baton Rouge, La.

A: Compelling research demonstrates that fluoride is a powerful toxin to many organs, and that oral fluoride does not prevent cavities. In fact, it weakens enamel and destroys the teeth — a condition called dental fluorosis.

Dental fluorosis has increased dramatically since fluoride was introduced into the drinking water. I have written two papers on the neurological damage caused by fluoride in drinking water, and the tablets have higher doses than found in water.

There are a number of studies showing a lowering of IQ in children who drink fluoridated water. It also suppresses the thyroid, increases cancer growth, increases free radical damage in the liver, and triggers immunoexcitotoxicity in the brain. The National Research Council completed an extensive review of the scientific evidence and agreed that fluoride is a significant toxin, especially to the brain and the thyroid.

Dentists also apply a fluoride-impregnated sealant that slowly releases fluoride into the mouth. I think this is insane. I would never let my grandchildren use fluoride in toothpaste, and certainly would never give them fluoride tablets. Once the brain damage is done, it can be permanent. I would hate to face my children years later and tell them that dad and mom ruined their health.

Read the chapter on fluoride in my book, “Health and Nutrition Secrets,” which deals extensively with the science of fluoride toxicity.
