Is Tinnitus Curable?

By Peter Hibberd, M.D.   |   Monday, 27 Jan 2014 10:30 AM

Question: I have tinnitus and have been told there is no cure for this condition except surgery. I don't want to have it. Is there any other way to eliminate or reduce the constant noise in my ears?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

Tinnitus is rarely treated with surgery, so without knowing the specifics of your case, it's hard to comment.
But it is true that no medication will treat tinnitus. I would recommend getting a second opinion from an ear, nose, and throat specialist on what on the various options you may have. Of course, if you have a acoustic neuroma (tumor), surgery may be your only choice.
Find out the cause of your tinnitus first, then address the options available.
