Can Female Facial Hair Growth Be Stopped?

By Peter Hibberd, M.D.   |   Wednesday, 06 Nov 2013 09:51 AM

Question: I’m a woman in my 40s who has long suffered from hirsutism (abnormal facial hair growth). Is there a natural way to stop this hair growth?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Long-term hirsutism can be either genetic or caused by a hormonal imbalance, such as too much testosterone. Are your menses normal or are they irregular? Do you have any other symptoms or do any of your relatives have similar issues?
It would be wise for you to be evaluated for polycystic ovary syndrome and other conditions associated with hirsutism. I would recommend you see your doctor for an assessment. Expect some blood testing and evaluation for endocrine disorders (diabetes, hypothyroidism), as well as an ultrasound of your ovaries to start.
