Cosmetic surgery is a $14 billion-a-year industry, with nearly 10 million procedures performed in the U.S. every year, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. But you don't have to go under the knife or undergo harsh anti-wrinkle treatments to look and feel younger.
Scott-Vincent Borba, a celebrity skin-care specialist and nutrition expert, tells Newsmax Health he has developed a program for having younger-looking skin that relies on nutrient-rich superfoods, recipes, and do-it-yourself facials that can enhance your appearance and give you a more youthful glow.
Within ringing endorsements from the likes of Paula Abdul, Mila Kunis, and Nancy O'Dell, his new book, "Cooking Your Way to Gorgeous," details natural prescriptions for better-looking skin that have an added side benefit: They're also good for your body and overall health.

"Everything starts from the inside out," says Borba. "So if you have psoriasis, dandruff, if you have acne, if you have deep lines or wrinkles … pretty much everything can really have an effect from a positive perspective if you treat your insides, and then if you use the same type of active ingredients outside you're going to get a one-two punch of beauty."

Borba's prescriptions for health and beauty stem from his experiences as a teen, struggling with severe acne and rosacea.
"I actually had to head-to-toe cystic acne, which … literally makes you want to hide in a corner," he recalls. "And I literally needed to have a treatment that was from the inside out because nothing topically would affect me from a full-body perspective."
After his father was diagnosed with prostate cancer, Borga began researching healthy plant-based natural treatments — remedies his father took that he believes helped him live longer than he otherwise would have. After his father's passing, Borba began trying the remedies himself to see if they would help clear up his own skin conditions.
"Knowing that that helped him out, I tried some of the concoctions on myself and I literally changed my whole-body skin from … being pretty much pockmarked-ridden to perfectly clear healthy glowing skin," he says.
Borba says his research and personal experiences have led him to conclude that the following five superfoods are key to younger looking, healthier skin.
Sustainable Malaysian red palm oil. This exotic oil, naturally red because of its high beta-carotene content, is prized not only as a healthy cooking ingredient, but also for its use in topical skin treatments. "Take out your olive oil and replace it with that," Borba advises. "It's going to make your foods … taste even better, but also you can literally place that oil right on top of your face. For a facial or body moisturizer, it's incredible. It's also great for your hair too."
Camu-camu. This cherry-like fruit from the Amazon rainforest is "the next acai berry," he says. "It's 1,000 times more potent in vitamin C content as well as has rich nutrients like isoflavonoids and anthocyanins, which both work together to help … you look younger."
Kale. This nutrient-rich green leafy vegetable is loaded with vitamins and minerals that make it an ideal ingredient for skin treatments as well as food. "Its [nutritional] content [helps] to make your body detoxify itself faster, but also locks in moisture longer," Borba says. "And it's also the best vegetable to eat."
Almond milk. This alternative to traditional cow's milk is a low-calorie, high-nutrition drink that can also be used as a rich topical skin moisturizer. "I really believe in almond milk, just because of the [dietary] benefits as well as less caloric intake," he says. "The benefits are astronomical when it comes down to using it topically too."
Jalapeno. "One of my favorites also too is good old jalapeno, just tabasco hot sauce," Borba notes. "That one right there can be added to your facial creams topically to increase circulation to give you a revitalization effect, but also when you … drink it, either in cocktails or in foods, it helps to detoxify your body as well as stimulate circulation and metabolism so you can use weight."
Borba emphasizes that the recipes in his new book aren't just about beauty, but are backed by serious research on their health benefits.
"Obviously every recipe has been dosed out so you actually get a beauty benefit from the first time you use it to long-term use of that recipe," he says. "But this is a great holistic book for anyone who wants to eat healthier.
"So just think about me being like the Barefoot Contessa of beauty cooking."
