A bit of lipstick and blush doesn’t just make women feel better and have more self-confidence—it could actually help older women retain the balance and coordination they need to keep from falling.
Dr. Patricia Pineau of the University of St. Etienne in France studied 100 women from ages 65 to 85. They were given special insoles that tested their center of gravity and a belt that monitored their posture. Those who wore makeup every day had much better balance and posture and had fewer falls.
Scientists believe that the act of applying lipstick, blusher and other cosmetics is a form of a stretching exercise, which improves balance and coordination.
“These women stood up straight and suffered fewer falls,” said Dr. Pineau, who is director of research communications at the cosmetics company L’Oreal Group. “It could help prevent many debilitating falls.”
