Lipstick Chemical a Risk for Breast Cancer

A synthetic chemical used to add the gloss to lipstick, nail polish, and other cosmetics may increase breast cancer risk, according to a study by the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

The researchers said that butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), mimics estrogen and changes the genetic make-up of mammary gland cells in young female rats, and that it interferes with the normal development of breast tissue.

BBP is also used to soften plastics, and is employed in the manufacturing of food packaging, carpeting, toys, and solvents.
