Vinegar Can Treat Yeast Infections: Here's How

By    |   Wednesday, 29 Jul 2015 12:31 AM

Vinegar is a natural remedy for a variety of health issues. Here are a few ways some people say they can help treat yeast infections.

Mayo Clinic experts explain vaginal yeast infections as a fungal problem. The fungus and bacteria in the vagina normally stay in a healthy balance. When the bacteria, which is acidic in nature, is compromised, an overgrowth of yeast can cause infection.

There are several causes of yeast infections, including the use of antibiotics, pregnancy or diabetes. However, anything that disturbs the pH balance can cause an over growth of yeast.

According to Home Remedies for Life, vinegar has several properties that allow it to be a good yeast infection fighter. Vinegar is antifungal in nature. This means it can combat the overgrowth of fungus which can lead to infections.

Vinegar is highly acidic, which can not only help restore good pH levels but also make the vagina a more hostile environment for the growth of bacteria which can lead to yeast infections.

Vinegar may also help serve as a natural antibiotic, which will help kill the bacteria causing yeast infections.

Home Remedies for Life recommends three different ways to use vinegar to fight yeast infections:
  1. To consume diluted in water
  2. To soak affected areas with a cotton ball or wet rag
  3. To douche with a solution of vinegar and distilled water
Douching with a white vinegar solution is among the alternative therapy methods suggested by the University of Maryland Medical Center. Experts there suggest seven days of daily douching with a mixture of 1 pint of water and 1 to 2 tablespoons of vinegar.

Another natural solution suggested by the University of Maryland Medical Center is a tea tree oil suppository.

Experts there also suggest dietary changes including more high fiber foods, foods low in trans fatty acids and high in antioxidants.

It is also wise to avoiding alcohol or caffeine and drink a lot of water.
