5 Benefits of Using Vinegar on Your Hair

By    |   Wednesday, 29 Jul 2015 12:47 AM

Vinegar has been one of the most popular condiments and food preservatives for thousands of years. It is used widely for a variety of cleaning benefits, but can also potentially help give users a lustrous, healthy head of hair.

The active ingredient in vinegar is acetic acid. The acid is a naturally occurring result from the fermentation of different kinds of fruits, oats, barley, rice, or other sugar grains.

According to Britannica, vinegar can be made from anything that can be turned into alcohol.

Here are five potential benefits of using vinegar on your hair.

1. Clean off product buildup.

Women’s Health magazine recommends rinsing freshly washed hair with a solution of two tablespoons vinegar to one cup water. This diluted solution is able to strip the residue from excess product use. Treated hair can be conditioned after rinsing.

2. Restore pH balance.

The pH of your scalp can be restored to a healthy balance through the acidic qualities of vinegar. According to Livestrong, many haircare products, like some shampoos, can turn the pH of hair slightly basic. The acidic qualities of vinegar can restore the right pH levels.

3. Cure dandruff.

The antifungal properties of vinegar are able to help prevent dandruff. Women’s Health magazine recommends either mixing a small amount of vinegar into the shampoo bottle, or keeping a 50/50 mixture of water and vinegar in the shower to rub into the scalp before shampooing. http://www.womenshealthmag.com/beauty/beauty-uses-for-vinegar

4. Detangling.

The website Apple Cider Vinegar Benefits suggests vinegar can be a great way to help detangle, especially for African-American hair.

5. Restoring hair loss.

The makers of Braggs Apple Cider vinegar promote the restoration of hair loss as one of the many benefits of their product. They recommend a topical solution used at night and right when washing.
