Throat cancer is disease in which the abnormal cells in the body multiply and spread to the entire body. These cells are malignant in nature and are known as tumors. One of the causes of throat cancer is a tumor in any part of the throat. Throat cancer is an uncommon disease and, like for any other type of cancer, chemotherapy is one of the treatment options.

The two types of throat cancer are:
  1. Pharyngeal cancer
  2. Laryngeal cancer
One of the causes of throat cancer is said to be genetic mutations that occur in the cells in the throat. The causes of throat cancer are not very clear. It is a fact that throat cancer is more common in men than in women. Causes or exact pointers behind this are unknown. People over 50 are more prone to this disease. Another one of the causes is the lifestyle habits of some people. While these are not the direct causes of the disease, they make a person more prone to the disease.
  • Smoking
  • Deficiency of vitamin A
  • Dismal dental hygiene
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
Human papillomavirus infections, commonly known as HPV, are considered to be another cause of throat cancer. This is a sexually transmitted disease. Other causes of throat cancer can be linked to lung cancer, esophageal cancer, or bladder cancer as well.

Once the cancer has been identified, the doctor will ask the patient to undergo a few tests that can help devise a treatment plan to cure the patient. Cure for this disease is present, but it might take longer than expected. A strong will is important for the patient, who is treading the path to a cure. Especially when procedures such as chemotherapy are involved, the patient needs to be really strong mentally. This is so because chemotherapy sessions, given for cure, can be painful and have several side effects that only a patient with a strong will can overcome.

The Different Stages of Throat Cancer

  • Stage 1: The growth of the tumor is below 7 centimeters, but it is still in the throat only.
  • Stage 2: The tumor grows a little larger but is still in the throat only.
  • Stage 3: The tumor has grown considerably and the nearby organs and tissues are affected.
