Cholesterol Supplements: Are They Effective for the Health of the Heart?

Thursday, 27 Feb 2014 01:02 AM

Cholesterol is an essential substance in the human body. There are different types of cholesterol like HDL (high-density lipoprotein), LDL (low-density lipoprotein), and VLDL (very-low-density lipoprotein). While LDL and VLDL are not good for the health of the heart, HDL protects the heart. High levels of HDL are actually good for the health of the heart. High levels of bad cholesterol in the blood invite many heart disorders.

One of the main reasons for increased levels of cholesterol and heart problems is a faulty diet. A diet rich in trans fat along with a sedentary lifestyle causes increased cholesterol and health hazards associated with the heart. High cholesterol means more chances of atherosclerosis, thus causing stroke and heart attack. Most of the time, we find it difficult to change our diet. Cholesterol supplements are getting popular worldwide to manage high cholesterol issues. These supplements work by reducing bad cholesterol while improving the HDL levels. It is important to note that not all cholesterol supplements available work efficiently in managing heart health and it is very important to modify our diet to increase HDL while reducing bad cholesterol.

To maintain good heart health, one should know which supplements are scientifically effective in reducing bad cholesterol. Omega-3 fatty acid supplements work better in the management of cholesterol. They are efficient in reducing LDL, VLDL, and triglycerides. A healthy diet containing fish and flax seeds is rich in omega-3 fatty acids.

Fenugreek supplements contain a lot of fiber and have shown results in reducing cholesterol. Fenugreek has been used in diets for thousands of years in India and Egypt. Fenugreek supplements are available in powder as well as capsule forms.

Garlic supplements are also effective as cholesterol-lowering supplements. Garlic is a natural ingredient in the Indian diet. Guggul, scientifically known as commiphora mukul, is a plant-based resin that has been used for centuries to address cholesterol and other health problems. Turmeric is another spice that is good for heart health. Curcumin present in turmeric is a strong antioxidant that balances the cholesterol levels. Niacin is another supplement reputed to lower the bad cholesterol as well as increase the HDL levels.

It is very important for you to know that merely taking supplements cannot control your cholesterol levels and protect the health of your heart. While supplements can support near normal levels of triglycerides, LDL, and VLDL, diet and exercise play vital roles in heart health. Only exercise can raise the HDL levels. Abstaining from smoking and losing weight are also effective means of raising HDL levels.
