Eyes Reveal Sexual Orientation

For the first time, researchers have determined that a person’s sexual orientation can be revealed by the dilation of their pupils while watching people they find attractive in adult films.
The findings, reported by Cornell University researchers, are based on tests using a specialized infrared lens that measured pupillary changes in the eyes of people shown erotic videos. The investigators found participants’ pupils widened while watching people they found attractive, revealing where they are on the sexual spectrum from straight to gay.
Past studies have examined the use of physiological measures, such as assessing physical arousal, to determine orientation. But such methods present obvious challenges and complications, noted Gerulf Rieger, who led the study, published in the Public Library of Science journal PLOS ONE.
"We wanted to find an alternative measure that would be an automatic indication of sexual orientation, but without being as invasive as previous measures,” he said. “Pupillary responses are exactly that."
He said the technique provides a new tool that will allow sex and health researchers to have “a much better understanding how sexuality is expressed across the planet."
The new Cornell study found significant differences in male and female responses to the films. As expected, heterosexual men showed strong pupillary responses to videos of women, and little to men. But heterosexual women showed pupillary responses to both sexes. Bisexual men showed substantial pupil dilations to videos of both men and women.
