Uses and Side Effects of Pyruvate Supplements

Thursday, 03 Apr 2014 01:19 AM

Pyruvate is a natural substance in our body available when energy is produced by digestion of carbohydrates. Pyruvate is available as a food supplement.

Pyruvate food supplements have many uses in treating obesity, high cholesterol, loss of energy, and even cancer prevention. The body uses pyruvate to convert sugars into energy. As the metabolism is raised, the body uses fats to provide energy, which results in fat depletion and weight loss.

People are also finding uses for pyruvate supplements as they apply them locally over their faces to reduce wrinkles. Pyruvic acid is said to work on the outer layer of the skin and helps in reversing aging due to exposure to the sun.

Weight-loss supplements are very popular these days but many are linked with side effects on long-term use. Calcium pyruvate is the most common supplement of pyruvate used for weight-loss purposes. People taking pyruvate for weight loss need to take on a healthy diet and exercise to achieve faster results. In its natural form, pyruvate is available in red wine, dark beer, apples, etc. The reason why people choose pyruvate supplements over natural foods rich in pyruvate is that the quantity of pyruvate in natural food is very low. Normally about five to 15 grams of pyruvate supplement is consumed for weight-loss purposes. This weight loss supplement works by helping in breaking down fat. This supplement promotes weight loss by increasing the basal metabolic rate of the body. Fat breakdown slowly helps in weight loss. Apart from weight loss, using pyruvate supplement for high cholesterol and endurance is also popular. Some studies have shown this supplement to be effective in lowering high cholesterol levels.

People taking pyruvate for its uses in weight loss and other purposes need to know about its side effects as well. Normally in lower doses, this supplement has no uses, is ineffective, and has no side effects. Consuming higher doses of this supplement is linked with side effects like stomach upset, bloating, constipation, or diarrhea. These side effects are produced as it is poorly absorbed in the body. Generally applying pyruvate to prevent wrinkles is not associated with side effects. It can produce more side effects in pregnant women and heart patients.

If you are impressed by its uses and want to take it for your health, consult your doctor as this supplement may affect dosages of other mediations.  Though no significant side effects are associated with this supplement, some long-term studies are required to ascertain that there are no side effects linked with it.
