Natural Cures to Joint Pain

By    |   Wednesday, 19 Aug 2015 01:41 PM

Joint pain can be attributed to aging and other related conditions like arthritis. But holistic medicine practitioners and nutritionists say there are several natural ways to help improve joint pain.

Some are simple, such as losing weight.

"When you walk across level ground, the force on your knees is the equivalent of 1½ times your body weight. That means a 200-pound man will put 300 pounds of pressure on his knees with each step. Add an incline and the force is greater. The force on each knee is two to three times your body weight when you go up and down stairs, and four to five times your body weight when you squat to tie a shoelace or pick up an item you dropped," Harvard researchers said.

A large weight loss is not needed to see results, the researchers added, noting that in women who are obese, losing 11 pounds cut their risk for osteoarthritis by 50 percent.

Applied on the skin itself, cayenne mixed with cocoa butter or coconut oil can be used as a natural joint salve, its heat providing comfort to aching joints, Organic Authority suggests. "Rubbing cayenne on the affected area causes a mild irritation, which in turn 'distracts' the nerves from the more severe joint pain," the website said.

Other foods and substances are thought to help cut down joint inflammation as well. Among them are licorice and flaxseed.

Licorice "acts much like your body’s own natural corticosteroids," cutting down on free radicals and acting on enzymes that create inflammation, Organic Authority reported. "The key component in [black] licorice, which blocks and relieves inflammation, is called glycyrrhizin. It supports the body’s release of cortisol, which suppresses the immune system and eases pain and frequency of arthritis flare-ups." However, the Food and Drug Administration says too much glycyrrhizin can lead to "abnormal heart rhythms, as well as high blood pressure, edema (swelling), lethargy, and congestive heart failure."

Flaxseed may also help relieve arthritis joint pain, according to the Arthritis Foundation. While studies haven't yet proven it improves arthritis, flaxseed is a natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known anti-inflammatories.
