Illicit, Illegal Drug Use Linked

Tuesday, 28 Feb 2012 11:20 AM

Drug addicts typically abuse prescription medications at the same time they’re taking illegal substances, and the drugs of choice vary by region of the country, a new study has found.
The report from researchers at the Drexel University School of Public Health identified patterns in the drug abuses among young adults in Los Angeles and New York.
The research, based on interviews with nearly 600 drug abusers between 2009-2011, also found legal prescription use of narcotic medications – including tranquilizers and stimulants – typically opened the door to illegal misuse of drugs.
Among their findings, published in the Journal of Public Health Research:
• The use of prescription pills and illicit drugs at the same time was common in both cities.
• Drug users tended to use an illicit drug that provided a similar effect as the prescription drug they were already misusing.
• New York users more frequently abused oxycodone, heroin and cocaine, while those in Los Angeles chose codeine, marijuana and methamphetamine.
