Exercise Chills hot Flashes

Menopausal women looking for a way to cool hot flashes might want to consider hitting the gym. New research shows women who exercise experience fewer hot flashes in the 24 hours following a workout.
The study, published by Penn State researchers in the journal Menopause, also found inactive, obese and overweight women are more likely to suffer increased symptoms of hot flashes.
Lead researcher Steriani Elavsky noted many women, and some heath experts, mistakenly believe working out can actually increase hot flashes because it raises the body’s core temperature. But, in fact, she said the new Penn State study found the opposite to be true.
"For women with mild to moderate hot flashes, there is no reason to avoid physical activity for the fear of making symptoms worse," said Elavsky. "In fact, physical activity may be helpful, and is certainly the best way to maximize health as women age. Becoming and staying active on a regular basis as part of your lifestyle is the best way to ensure healthy aging and wellbeing, regardless of whether you experience hot flashes or not."
For the study, Elavsky and colleagues studied 92 menopausal women in their 40s and 50s who were experiencing hot flashes and not taking hormone therapy. For 15 days, researchers tracked their physical activity and the women recorded their individual hot flashes on a personal digital device.
By the study’s end, they found the women experienced fewer hot flash symptoms after exercising. They also noted the smallest reduction in symptoms among women in the study who were overweight, had a lower level of fitness and were experiencing more frequent or intense hot flashes.
Elavsky said the study did not determine whether a woman could use diet and exercise to lose weight and become more fit and therefore experience fewer hot flashes, but future research into such connections is worth pursuing.
The study was funded, in part, by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
