Do Brain Games Help Prevent Alzheimer's?

Wednesday, 08 Jan 2014 10:48 PM

Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder affecting the body’s ability to perform daily activities. Short-term memory loss is among the main symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. It is a form of dementia and its cure is still unknown. Age and genetics are considered two risk factors of Alzheimer’s that cannot be controlled. However, lifestyle and health are factors that can be controlled. Even though causes associated with it are not identified and there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, its symptoms can be controlled.

How Do Brain Games Prevent Alzheimer’s?

A study on 294 adults ages 55 and older was published in the journal Neurology. This suggested that frequent cognitive activities could help in slowing down declining cognitive abilities. Brain stimulating activities like playing brain games can improve connections between brain cells. This can help generate new nerve cells. Crossword puzzles, chess, and games such as sudoku are some brain games that can help prevent Alzheimer’s.

People who engage themselves in memory and brain-stimulating games throughout their lives were found to have lower levels of beta amyloids responsible for the formation of hardened plaques that cause loss of memory and affect the ability to think. These games may not prevent memory loss but they can prevent the risk of Alzheimer’s. Other than brain games, involvement in hobbies like reading, gardening, or attending lectures can also be helpful.

Which Brain Games Prevent Alzheimer’s?

The right kind of brain games can help to prevent Alzheimer’s and the loss of memory. Playing cards can be among the great brain stimulation games. It stimulates the memory and prevents Alzheimer’s. Computerized games and training programs can also be helpful in preventing Alzheimer’s. These memory aids and mind stimulating games are simple and inexpensive. These activities keep the mind active. Though there is no scientific evidence showing that games can prevent Alzheimer’s, it is suggested that stimulating the mind on a regular basis is beneficial to delay disease onset and slow down its progression.

Adults who spend time playing games like chess can prevent the risk of this disease. Leisure activities stimulate the mind and prevent Alzheimer’s. Mental training programs act in a manner similar to mind exercises that prevent mental disorders and dementia. Video games that involve active participation of the mind can also be effective in preventing Alzheimer’s.
