VA Medical Errors Often Kept Secret: Report

By    |   Monday, 20 Apr 2015 04:35 PM

Active military service personnel — and their families — are often left in the dark about medical errors in care they receive in military hospitals or Veterans Affairs healthcare professionals, according to a new analysis.

The New York Times reports that tens of thousands of serious medical mistakes happen every year at U.S. hospitals and clinics, but many patients and their families — in and out of the military — face significant obstacles if they try to find out what went wrong.

The nation’s 1.3 million active-duty service members are in a special bind, virtually powerless to hold accountable the healthcare system that treats them, The Times reports.

About 18 months ago, the Pentagon explicitly allowed service members to file complaints about their treatment, but even then they are barred from learning the results of any inquiry.

Under federal law, investigations at military hospitals and clinics are confidential. And The Times identified scores of cases in which active-duty patients, relatives and military medical workers were stymied in their efforts to get to the truth about suspected medical mistakes — through freedom-of-information requests, complaints, and meetings with military medical officials.

“There is just no transparency. You can’t sue. You have no insight into the process,” said Cheryl Garner, a military intelligence officer who retired last year. “As active duty, we just don’t have much recourse.”
