Study: Tart Cherry Juice Improves Sleep

If you're having trouble sleeping falling asleep or simply want a better night's sleep without taking pills, drinking two glasses of tart cherry juice each day could be your solution.
A new study published in the European Journal of Nutrition revealed that when adults drank cherry juice, they slept an average of 39 minutes longer. Overall sleep efficiency (less non-sleep time in bed) was also improved. An international team of researchers found that when adults had two daily glasses of tart cherry juice, they slept 39 minutes longer, on average, and had up to 6 percent increase in overall sleep efficiency (significantly less non-sleep time in bed), compared to when they drank a non-cherry, fruit cocktail.
In a study conducted at Britain's Northumbria University, 20 healthy adults drank two servings of tart cherry juice concentrate (1 ounce of 100 percent pure cherry juice diluted in a pint of water per serving) or a non-cherry fruit drink for seven consecutive days at a time — one serving when they woke up, and another before bed. When the researchers tracked participants' sleep habits, they found significant improvements in sleep behaviors when they drank the cherry juice, compared to when they drank the non-cherry juice drink.
The researchers credit the sleep benefits to the melatonin content of cherries. Melatonin is a powerful antioxidant critical for regulating the sleep-wake cycle. Each serving of the tart cherry juice concentrate was estimated to contain the equivalent of 90 to 100 tart cherries, providing a significant level of melatonin in the juice and ultimately in the bodies of the participants.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third of all Americans suffer from sleep disturbances. Currently, Americans spend more than $84 million on over-the-counter sleep aids each year, leaving many searching for cost-effective ways to help manage their conditions. Cherry juice could be a healthy answer.
