Study: Man's Finger Length Indicates How Nice He Is to Women

Trying to decide if the man in your life is likely to be a good partner? Maybe you should take a good look at his fingers, a new study suggests.

According to researchers at McGill University, men with short index fingers and long ring fingers are on average nicer toward women, as well as more likely to be faithful.

How and why? The medical investigators say the unexpected connection stems from the hormones these men have been exposed to in their mother’s womb. The findings, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, suggest that this has an impact on how adult men behave, especially with women, Fox News reports.

“It is fascinating to see that moderate variations of hormones before birth can actually influence adult behavior in a selective way,” said Simon Young, a professor of psychiatry and coauthor of the study.

Men’s index fingers are generally shorter than their ring fingers. Previous research has found that “digit ratio” — defined as the second finger length divided by the fourth finger length — is an indication of the amount of male hormones, chiefly testosterone, someone has been exposed to as a fetus: the smaller the ratio, the more male hormones.

A study released earlier this month tied the so-called "2D:4D" ratio to a man’s promiscuity. The latest study says the same ratio not only confirms men with longer ring fingers tend to more promiscuous, but are also nicer to women.

“When with women, men with smaller ratios were more likely to listen attentively, smile and laugh, compromise or compliment the other person," said lead researcher Debbie Moskowitz, in a McGill University press release. "Our research suggests they have more harmonious relationships with women ... This might explain why they have more children on average."

The results were based on surveys of 155 participants on their behavior, as well as measurements of their fingers.
