Doctors' Bad Behavior Exposed in Medical Journal

By    |   Tuesday, 18 Aug 2015 01:24 PM

Have you ever wondered if a doctor said anything inappropriate about you while you are under anesthetic? It happens, says an anonymous essay printed in the respected journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

The author recounted two experiences of doctors mocking patients while they were undergoing surgery. Editors of the journal said they published the article in order to expose the "dark underbelly" of medicine, and to encourage health officials not to accept bad behavior when they encounter it.

The essay entitled "Our Family Secret," recounted an experience during medical school in which the instructor asked students if they had done or encountered behavior that required them or someone else to apologize for. After a strained silence, one doctor admitted witnessing an experience involving a surgeon prepping a patient for a hysterectomy. The surgeon made rude comments, suggesting the woman was "enjoying" the procedure, and the medical student felt pressured to laugh.

The instructor replied that he had witnessed an incident that still haunted him. A woman who had just given birth was hemorrhaging, and in the process of stopping the bleeding, the doctor, sang, danced, and made racial comments. The instructor, who was also a medical student at the time, also felt pressured to laugh.

"The first incident reeked of misogyny and disrespect — the second reeked of all that plus heavy overtones of sexual assault and racism," wrote the journal editors.

"By shining a light on this dark side of the profession, we emphasize to physicians young and old that this behavior is unacceptable — we should not only refrain from personally acting in such a manner but also call out our colleagues who do," they said.

"We hope that medical educators and others will use this essay as a jumping-off point for discussions that explore the reasons why physicians sometimes behave badly and brainstorm strategies for handling these ugly situations in real time," they wrote.

An account of mocking, disrespectful behavior recently made news which showed that such incidents can ultimately prove to be financially costly to doctors. A Virginia man accidentally recorded mocking and rude comments made by his anesthesiologist during his colonoscopy. The patient sued, and in June, was awarded $500,000.
